Digital technologies and media are changing our world and transforming how we think, communicate and create. For the past two years the International Baccalaureate has been hard at work designing for these disruptions with an exciting new diploma programme course called digital society.
Beginning in 2021, this course will invite educators and secondary-age young people to critically explore this changing world to better understand where we are now and imagine where we might go next.
Experimental, timely and practical, the digital society course approaches technologies and media through social, cultural and ethical lenses. Arranged around a set of core units, concepts and focus areas, the course is flexibly designed to encourage teachers and students to personalise course content through dynamic connections to real world examples and issues.
In this workshop, we will unpack key elements and perspectives from the emerging digital society course in order to offer broader insight into the unique and rich value that the humanities and social sciences bring to a range of contemporary global contexts.
By the end of this workshop we will:- Introduce and explore a range of tools and skills within the social sciences and humanities that help us better understand and engage with the digital world around us
- Examine and discuss links between concept-based learning and teaching with real world examples and issues
- Prototype and test possible assessment strategies that empower young people to work together to better understand their place in a global digital society.
