Improvisation is not easy. It takes a lot of confidence to “think on the spot” – for many people, even in their own mother tongue. However, developing the confidence to respond, to “just start talking” and get our message across without a preoccupation with “what is correct English” is an essential part of our job as language teachers. Improvisation aims to do this. And, if we can improvise situations that are or may be familiar to our own lives, then it not only develops confidence, but also adds a sense of relevance and purposefulness. In this session, I would like to look at ways of introducing improvisation techniques into the language classroom and helping language become a real “means to an end”.

At the end of this day participants will:
- Hopefully feel more able to incorporate improvisation into their classroom
