Based on Bard College’s Innovative Pedagogical Research and Practice at the Institute for Writing & Thinking, “Writing to Think: Fostering an Engaged Classroom” will be experiential, asking teachers to be students for its duration. These practices have been adapted to Bard’s partners around the world, and are woven throughout the undergraduate and Masters of Arts in Teaching curricula at Al-Quds Bard College in Palestine; they are also the basis for international professional development workshops in places as diverse as Lithuania, Egypt and Vietnam, adapted into different cultural and linguistic contexts. In this introductory workshop, we will employ several core low stakes writing practices, inviting teachers to use them in relation to select texts to discover and interpret meaning in texts and then to engage in productive dialogue, both written and verbal. The workshop facilitators will also invite reflective learning, encouraging teachers to converse about the ways in which low stakes writing can develop critical thinking and academic writing skills in their own classrooms.

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Consider writing-based techniques as generative rather than simply for assessment purposes
- Enrich and deepen learning in all disciplines through low stakes writing, both inside and outside the classroom
